Cryotherapy is a cold sauna, using sub-zero temperatures to reduce inflammation and pain, and improve muscle recovery.
Cryotherapy is now a regular part of the recovery strategy for many of the world’s top athletes. It is a whole body experience that is effective in a maximum of just three minutes. Cryotherapy is anti-inflammatory, anti-analgesic, anti-oxidant and can be used before exercise for increased endurance, or afterwards for an accelerated recovery time.
The well documented benefits of cryotherapy include:
- Reduced pain and inflammation
- Improved athletic performance
- Improved recovery from injury
- Improved sleep
- Improved mood and well-being
- Improved brain function
To maintain these benefits, we recommend consistent cryotherapy sessions: ideally one to three sessions a week, depending on your training intensity and body’s response.
Cryotherapy is particularly suited to athletes, people suffering inflammatory diseases or injuries, people suffering acute pain or people who work in stressful jobs.
Once you’ve arrived for your cryotherapy session, you’ll change into our comfy robe, cryo booties, thermal gloves and socks. Beneath this can choose to wear any dry undergarments on.
After you’re dressed and ready we’ll take you to the cold chamber and stay with you for the whole three minutes. Your head and neck stay out of the chamber, and all you’ll feel on your body is a dry cold. You can end the session at any time you choose to, and we’ll talk to you throughout, encouraging you to rotate your body so you get the most out of your session.
For the most profound physical results we recommend directly following up your cryotherapy with a compression boots session, and finishing off with a thirty minute infrared sauna. The combination of treatments optimises your recovery and pain relief, giving you the complimentary benefits of all three.

Frequently Asked Questions
IS THERE ANY SCIENCE BEHIND THE BENEFITS OF CRYOTHERAPY?
IS LIQUID NITROGEN SAFE?
Nitrogen is the main component (80%) of the air we breathe. So nitrogen is not toxic to us, but we would faint if we breathed in pure nitrogen, because we would have no oxygen. That is why your head stays above the tank (cold nitrogen drops below the warmer air so you don’t breath it in). That is also why there is someone supervising every cryotherapy session, just in case you start feeling faint.
There is no solid or liquid form of nitrogen in the tank you stand in. It has been vapourised first so is safe on your skin.
WHAT DO I NEED TO DO TO PREPARE?
Please ensure you haven’t shaved within 12 hours of your appointment and do not have any creams or oils on your skin.
WHO SHOULD AVOID CRYOTHERAPY?
You are not permitted into a Recovery Jungle facility if you have any infectious diseases, including COVID-19.
If you have any of the conditions or circumstances below, you should seek medical advice before trying cryotherapy
- Any heart or respiratory diseases
- Any circulatory disfunction
- Chronic liver disease
- Acute kidney and urinary tract diseases
- Severe Anemia
- Cold Allergenic Phenomenon (known allergy to cold contactants)
- Heavy consumerist diseases (abnormal bleeding)
- Seizure disorders
- Bacterial and viral infections of the skin
- Wound healing disorders (open sores or discharging wound/skin conditions)
- Hyperhidrosis – heavy perspiration
DOES IT BURN CALORIES?
The evidence is that 500-800 calories are burned in the 24 hours post-treatment. No this does not mean you can cut back on training!
WHAT IS THE DRESS CODE?
Men need to wear underwear or a pair of compression shorts plus the mittens, booties and robe provided. You can wear a sports bra if you prefer.
Remove all jewelry and watches.
WILL I BE COMFORTABLE?
The temperature is very cold. You may feel discomfit, and this will become more intense as the treatment progresses. The final 30 seconds are usually the most uncomfortable. The discomfort is from feeling cold. You may shiver and you will breath harder. Because the treatment is only two to three minutes, most people can deal with the discomfort, but you can always cut the treatment short if you want to. People tend to acclimatise themselves to the sensation after a couple of treatments. It is always much more comfortable than an ice bath.
HOW WILL I FEEL AFTER TREATMENT
This varies from person to person. Some people feel amazing and invigorated. Some people can feel sleepy and tired after the first few treatments. The latter is because their bodies are going into repair mode. A tired reaction might last for the first 1-3 sessions after which we expect you will be energised and feel great post treatment.
Many people with sleep issues find that their sleep improves following treatment.
WHEN WILL I EXPERIENCE RESULTS?
This depends on the reasons you are seeking treatment, and how your body responds.
For short term training and well-being issues, you may need up to five sessions to experience results, although many people report improvements in less.
For chronic pain or injuries, you may need up to ten sessions. If you are not experiencing any improvements after ten sessions, then cryotherapy is unlikely to address your issue.
HOW OFTEN SHOULD I GET TREATMENTS?
Answers vary from individual to individual. Work with the team in Recovery Jungle to benefit from their experience and experiment a little to find the optimal treatment regime for you. For athletes we would expect that one to three sessions per week would be required depending on your training intensity, age and natural recovery ability.
HOW LONG BEFORE I CAN TRAIN AGAIN?
Your muscles are not frozen (which is what happens with ice treatment), so there are no dangers in training straight away. Just make sure you warm up first.
WILL I NEED TO SHOWER BEFORE OR AFTER CRYOTHERAPY?
No. Cryotherapy is a dry treatment and your skin doesn’t touch any surfaces in the tank. You don’t need to shower beforehand and you can immediately get changed back into your everyday clothes and go about your business once the treatment is finished.
